9th Annual Garlic Mustard Weed-Out Day!

Looking for something to do this beautiful Saturday (May 5th)? Spend your day from 10-1 PM in the sun removing garlic mustard from Ann Arbor’s nature areas: Argo Park, Bird Hills, and Cedar Bend. A BBQ will follow at Island Park Pavilion after all that hard work from 1:30-5 PM, where the person who bags the most garlic mustard will win a prize! Bring a dish to pass or anything to grill. Burgers, buns, condiments and beverage provided.

Last chance for Friends books until next fall! The Friends of the AADL will be holding their annual Big Spring Book Sale this weekend, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. This end of season event is packed with great deals and chances to rub elbows with your fellow Ann Arbor-ites while buying books half-price (Saturday), or filling a grocery bag with books and records for $4 (Sunday and Monday). So pack the car with sturdy canvas tote bags and head over to the Downtown Library’s lower level to participate in this welcome harbinger of spring!

Fans of Project Runway should head to the Downtown Library this Friday at 6 to check out the Project Design Fashion Show featuring the work of local high school and college students. Still need convincing? The models will take the runway to the sounds of DJ Jacoby, and a reception with light food and drinks caps off the evening.

Gear up for spring at Downtown Home and Garden this Saturday with owner Mark Hodesh, who’ll be digging up the dirt on lawn care from 10am to 2pm. Nostalgic for winter already? Head over to the Ann Arbor Ice Cube and get your shiver back at the annual Melody on Ice. The show will feature local skaters of all ages performing a variety of acts—from traditional figure skating to synchronized teams, crazy stunts and more. Afterwards, pop into the neighboring Pittsfield Branch to snuggle up with a book and some tasty vending machine hot chocolate.

Actually, it seems to be warming up a bit. So there’s no excuse not to check out the Buhrrr Fest this Saturday! According to the Ann Arbor Observer, there will be ice skating, a bonfire complete with s'mores, and special events, including “a figure skating exhibition, an ice cream eating contest, and broomball.” Sound fun? I think so!

Got some tough questions for Lloyd Carr and his 2006 team? Head to the Neutral Zone on Thursday, February 15 to hear more about Coach Carr’s favorite off season pastime: reading. Carr will be joined by Adam Kraus, Chad Henne, and everyone’s favorite powerhouse, Michael Hart to discuss not the successes and failures of the 2006 season, but rather the importance of reading in their lives. The event is a fundraiser for the Ann Arbor Book Festival, which runs from May 17-20 this spring. Tickets are $10 for individuals and $30 for families, and can be obtained on the festival’s website. So leave those lingering football questions at home and find out what Chad Henne keeps on his nightstand.

Here we are at … the City of Ann Arbor’s Holiday Break Camp for kids ages 6 – 10 years old. The Bryant Community Center is the place to be 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Jan. 2 – 5, 2007. Why pull out all the decorating stops when someone else has already done it for you? According to the Ann Arbor News, the Museum on Main Street is serving up nostalgia this holiday season—glass ornaments, aluminum trees, and even a tree made from goose feathers (!) fill the small house on the corner of Beakes and Main. The museum is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4, and procrastinators need not fret—the exhibit runs until January 17. For the industrious at heart, the library also carries a large selection of holiday decorating books.

Early birds (har har!) gear up: the Washtenaw Audubon Society is conducting their 60th annual Christmas Bird Count this Saturday, beginning at 6am. Experts and novices alike are welcome, so grab one of our bird watching books, and join the holiday fun!

Those Tibetan prayer flags on your porch looking worn and faded? For something truly off the beaten path, hit up the Himalayan Bazaar in my Garage, also this Saturday, hosted by Of Global Interest’s Heather O’Neil, who stocks the bazaar with brightly colored items from her travels. Happy trekking!

Bahumbugs Beware: Local Holiday Events!

Missed out on this year’s earlier-than-usual Children’s Holiday parade? Not to worry--there are plenty of holiday traditions left to enjoy. Though a certain someone shudders every time I play another Christmas CD, there’s only so much time to enjoy the festive mood before January sets in (blah), so why not enjoy? First up, Kerrytown’s own Tree Lighting Ceremony, Sunday, November 26 at 5p.m. Followed by the 60th Annual Greens Market at the Women’s City Club on Thursday the 30th. Finally, head downtown on December 1st for the biannual tradition, Midnight Madness—stores open late, legendary Le Dog soup at night, and sales galore—what could be better?
